There will always be resistance to change, as many employees see change as a threat. Additionally, employees are in a comfort zone by themselves in the current state of processes and outputs.
In such a scenario, the effort of the Six Sigma team will be wasted if they do not build a solid foundation to base the changes, which will ultimately prove beneficial.
Leadership Capabilities and Involvement
One of the most critical factors to change initiatives is the capability of the leaders. Unless the leader leads from the front, the change initiatives undertaken cannot be successful.
The leadership with the experience and expertise has to have the ability to undertake risk in the business, as well as on a personal level. They should demonstrate their commitment to change and work towards sustained transformation in the process with the help of other members in the business.
They should be actively involved in bringing about changes which are for the betterment of the entire organization. Being leaders, if they lead by example in accepting changes, then such an initiative will find many takers.
Commitment of Top Management
The commitment shown by top management and department heads is the key to success in change initiatives.
If managers do not show any support to efforts to bring in improvements, then teams will find it very hard to move ahead with restructuring and re-designing. It is highly difficult for managers who are used to a certain way of working to now accept certain changes.
It is necessary that training be undertaken before a change initiative, so that there is a feeling of comfortable relationship among team members. Middle level managers are also critical to the effort and need to be involved in decision-making and change processes undertaken as a part of the process.
An ignored manager will be more of a hindrance than a support to the change initiative.
Creating Powerful Vision and Communication
It is extremely important to develop a clear vision of the benefits of the changes being proposed.
If it were clarified for what purpose the change initiative is planned, the problems it will handle, and the outcome of these, this will prove beneficial. Keeping the vision in front of everyone will help focus everyone's energy towards achieving it.
At the same time, communicating the vision regularly helps keep this focus. The communication need not mean only sending emails and holding meetings; it can be done as part of recreational programs also.
Create and Train Facilitators or Change Agents
To make such change processes successful, it is important to select and train change agents. Their training should be facilitated to include people skills along with analytical skills and statistical knowledge.
With such skills in their kitty, they can energetically undertake change initiatives and ensure their successful implementation.
