Most people have heard of the old tradition that the bride should wear "something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue".
This is a centuries old tradition and is meant to bring the bride all the luck in the world. But did you know that each of these four things is meant to represent different types of luck?
"Something old" represents links with the past and the good luck that was in the family in generations past. To ignore one's past is to cut off a large part of one's present, so wearing something old is meant to give greater richness to the present moment.
"Something new" is about the most classic type of good luck charm: good luck with the future. The idea is that wearing something new shows a real commitment to new beginnings and a long-term union.
"Something borrowed" is all about trust and friendship. Friends can bring a great deal of luck into our lives, and whenever we give back what we have borrowed, we are showing that we are trustworthy. In addition to this, if we are trustworthy, we will be more likely to be allowed to borrow more things in the future. So, in other words, if we have friends from whom we can borrow, we are lucky, and if we make sure we return the borrowed items, we are luckier still.
"Something blue" is the most obscure of the four - blue, when worn on a wedding day, is traditionally meant to convey fidelity, love and modesty.
There are various ways in which the bride can make sure she has everything on the list covered. One easy way would be to borrow something old and blue from a friend if the brides dress is new, or something new and blue if the bride's dress is old. Simple!
Otherwise there are various other ways. Flowers can be a great way to cover blue. Imagine a bouquet or a hairstyle festooned with tiny blue cornflowers. That could add a great deal to the overall aesthetic appeal, while also ticking a very important box.
The "new", part of the tradition is rarely a problem. Most brides will be wearing at least one thing new. Nowadays at least. It might be the dress, the shoes, the stockings, a necklace, jewelery, or even simply some new hair pins.
The "old" part won't be a problem for families of hoarders. If you come from a family who traditionally loves attics, and can't bear to throw anything away, then there will be bound to be some treasured trinket that could be the cherry on the cake - the final flourishing finishing touch to a perfect bride, who also happens to naturally be wearing something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue.
