Why Do I Put on Weight?

Why we put on weight doesn't take Einstein to work out. If you exceed the recommended calories regularly without burning them through physical activity, then you are likely to put on weight. However the causes behind you not burning the calories off are not always that obvious.

So that simply means all we have to do is eat less calories and burn energy through exercise, sounds simple doesn't it? Research has shown that lifestyles are often blamed for the reason why some of us eat more calories, coupled with doing little or no exercise at all. Meaning we eat more than what we need to without realising it.

Here could be some of the under-lying causes for your weight gain

Regular Holidays

In this time of uncertainty regular holidays may be a distant memory, but for those of us that are going away frequently, may find their weight a bit more of an issue. For a lot of us holidays are when we put on weight.

The main thing to remember is just because you are on holiday does not mean you have to eat and drink more. You are still able to have fun and be on holiday. Simple changes such as, keeping an eye on your portions and drinking alcohol that is lower in calories. Exercise does not have to stop on holiday either, whether it is a family bike ride or going to the gym first thing.

Desk Work

If you are one of the many that spend their work life at a desk or spend a lot of time at home on the internet, then spare a thought for your waistline. Sitting down all day will not be doing you any good. By doing at least 30 minutes a day exercise five days a week will help you to maintain your weight. If you are looking to lose weight then you will need to increase this up to 60 minutes.

Stress

If you are feeling stressed then it is all too easy to reach for your favorite comfort food, meaning if you are not careful you could end up putting on weight. By snacking on fruit and also coping with stress without turning to food will help you not to lose weight. Exercise may be the last thing you want to do when you are stressed, but it really can help you feel better within yourself, whilst burning off those all important calories.

Low Fat Food

It is so easy to walk into any supermarket and pick yourself up a low-fat option. What you really need to be careful of is that it is not high in sugar or sweeteners. High sugar foods can cause weight gain. It can be a pain but always read the label and check the overall energy and calories.

Portion Size

I'm sure I am not the only one who goes out for a meal and is quite disappointed if there is not a huge amount of food on my plate. The reason for this is portion sizes have increased over the years and with this our weight gain has to. Making sure we eat normal size portions is not too difficult, simply stop eating when you feel full. Also by cooking food fresh you are able to control your portion size yourself. If you are at home use a smaller plate, trick your brain into thinking it is eating more than what it is.

Putting on weight does not have to be part of your life. You are able to successfully lose weight and maintain weight.
